A conexão de periféricos externos ao computador seria impossível sem adaptadores especiais, feita na forma de filho de portas de entrada/saída na placa-mãe. Esses portos estão em constante interação com o sistema microprocessador, que controla a troca de dados entre os equipamentos que quer ligar o dispositivo de hardware e software.
